Total Time:40 minutes
Yield:6 servings
Ingredients
Filling:
1 lb pork mince (ground pork)
1 packet French onion soup mix (or 1 cup sautéed onions + 1 tsp onion powder)
1 tbsp tomato ketchup
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp Dijon mustard
Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
Pastry & Finish:
2 sheets puff pastry, thawed if frozen
1 egg
1 tbsp milk
Optional Extras:
Cheese (cheddar, mozzarella), quantity to preference
Fresh herbs (thyme, rosemary, parsley), quantity to preference
Chili flakes for spice, quantity to preference
Instructions
Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
Prepare Filling: In a large bowl, combine the pork mince, French onion soup mix (or sautéed onions with onion powder), tomato ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and freshly cracked black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
Assemble Rolls: Roll out the puff pastry sheets and cut each sheet in half lengthwise to create strips. Place a portion of the sausage filling along one edge of each pastry strip. If using, add cheese, fresh herbs, or chili flakes on top. Carefully roll the pastry over the filling and seal the edges by brushing with a little water or egg wash to ensure they stick together.
Apply Egg Wash: Beat the egg with the milk to create an egg wash. Using a pastry brush, generously brush the tops of the sausage rolls with the egg wash to achieve a golden, glossy finish when baked.
Bake: Place the prepared sausage rolls on the lined baking tray, spacing them evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and the filling is fully cooked.
Cool & Serve: Remove the rolls from the oven and allow them to rest for a few minutes to set. Slice into desired portions and serve warm with your favorite dips or sides, or enjoy them as a tasty snack on their own.
Notes
For a vegetarian version, substitute pork mince with plant-based mince and use vegetarian French onion soup mix.
You can prepare filling ahead of time and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before assembling.
If puff pastry is frozen, thaw fully in the refrigerator before use to prevent cracking.
Adding cheese inside the rolls makes them richer and melty; choose your favorite types like cheddar or mozzarella.
Adjust chili flakes to your preferred spice level or omit for mild flavor.
Brush pastry edges with water or egg wash carefully to ensure the rolls seal properly and prevent filling from spilling.
Ensure pork mince is fully cooked by checking that the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) if you have a food thermometer.
