Reese’s Pieces Muddy Buddies is a delightful and crunchy snack mix combining crispy Chex cereal coated in a rich chocolate and peanut butter blend, dusted with powdered sugar, and studded with mini Reese’s cups and Reese’s pieces for a sweet and salty treat perfect for parties or everyday snacking.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

Snack Mix

  • 9 cups Chex cereal
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups mini Reese’s cups
  • 1 1/2 cups Reese’s pieces

Instructions

  1. Melt ingredients: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, unsalted butter, and vanilla extract. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly between each interval until the mixture is fully melted and smooth.
  2. Coat cereal: Pour the melted chocolate and peanut butter mixture over the 9 cups of Chex cereal. Stir gently but thoroughly until all the cereal pieces are evenly coated.
  3. Prepare sugar coating: Place 3 cups of powdered sugar into two separate gallon-sized storage bags, dividing the sugar equally between them.
  4. Coat with powdered sugar: Divide the coated cereal mixture between the two bags containing powdered sugar. Seal each bag tightly and shake vigorously until the cereal is fully coated with the powdered sugar.
  5. Set the mixture: Spread the coated cereal on a baking sheet or keep it in the sealed bags and let it set for 1 hour. This allows the coating to firm up and the flavors to meld.
  6. Add candies: Before serving, add 1 1/2 cups of mini Reese’s cups and 1 1/2 cups of Reese’s pieces. Gently fold or toss to combine evenly throughout the mix.

Notes

  • Use unsalted butter to control the saltiness and avoid overpowering the sweet flavors.
  • Microwave in short intervals to prevent burning the chocolate and peanut butter mixture.
  • Shake the cereal gently but thoroughly to get an even coating with powdered sugar.
  • Letting the mixture set helps the coating firm up for better texture and less mess.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to one week to maintain freshness and crunch.
  • For a nut-free version, substitute the peanut butter with sunflower seed butter and omit Reese’s candies if allergy concerns exist.
